Now is the time of the year when much of the population gears up to return to school. All ages need to take a look at their health status and prepare for the year ahead.

Students from kindergarten through college may need vaccinations and physical examinations. Children may require as many as 26 immunizations before age 6. Other ages may need vaccination updates such as tetanus, Hepatitis B or a tuberculosis test. If your child is home schooled, take a minute to pull out their vaccination records and verify that they are up to date. Most youngsters in public schools will be notified by the school if additional vaccinations are needed. If you are an adult going to college, make sure you know what the vaccination requirements are and don’t wait until the last minute to get them. For example, the tuberculosis (TB) test takes 48 - 72 hours to be read after it is administered.

Physical examinations are required for most sports programs and entrance into college and trade schools. Make sure you read the form and don’t be caught by surprise should you need extra tests such as lab work, a chest xray or special clearance for a medical condition.

Teachers, coaches and other school personnel will want to schedule annual check ups before the start of the school year. It is very easy to neglect these once the busy school year starts.
